Evisu Jeans
The founder of Evisu Jeans is Hidehiko Yamane who is still the owner today. He was trained as a tailor
but he found disappointment with the mass-produced versions of vintage clothing. He had a love for
vintage jeans that led him to put together all the elements required to reproduce authentic vintage styles.
In order to do so Yamane-san had to gather machinery that had not been produced for over 40 years that
was required to make authentic vintage jeans. Initially the production line only allowed 14 pairs of
jeans to be produced a day. Each pair of Evisu Jeans were painted by hand with the famous seagull logo.
The name Evisu came from the name of the Japanese Buddhist god of money. Evisu was selected as the name
for this clothing line because money is one of Yamane-san’s five favorite things.
Evisu was more of a love labour than a commercial endeavor however Evisu Jeans captured the
attention of the Japanese fashion crowd and their love of detail. Evisu jeans spurred a revival of
vintage denum around the globe.
Evisu Jeans are all made of vintage selvedge denim on old style shuttle looms rather than modern looms.
Modern looms shoot each cross thread individually caused the edge of the cloth to be frayed. With the
old looms the the cross thread goes back and forth during weaving and cause the edges to be clean. All
the looms used to make Evisu denim are 40 years old or older and are not very reliable. The
traditional method was used to maximize the usage of the jeans.
All Evisu denim is dyed indigo by loop dying machines. These machines are also rare and antique.
Evisu Jeans have a minimum requirement of 16 dips and some styles with a deep blue color receive 30 dips.
Evisu jeans also contain 100 cotton threads which are authentic but break easily during the sewing process.
The original vintage production techniques are reproduced during every stage in making Evisu Jeans.
Because of the intense process, authenticity, and hand painted designs of Evisu jeans they tend to cost much
higher than normal jeans. The deep indigo of Evisu jeans and the way that they fade can only be achieved by
the specific process that is used by the clothing company with the antique looms and dying system.
Evisu jeans have something that no other jeans can give their buyers and that’s why they are one of the
most popular jeans in hip hop clothing today.
