Obey Clothing
Obey clothing was founded by legendary street artist shepard Fairey. Creating
abstract and real world artwork for years, his work can be seen at any street corner
on stickers, posters, stencils, and other media. Beginning art at a very early age,
he learned much of his technique through lifestyles of skateboarding and the urban
underground scene. He found great pleasure in studying graphics and music, studying
album cover artwork of rock, punk, and Hip Hop music artists.
In 1989 Shepard Fairey was not quite thinking of Obey Clothing yet. The Charleston,
South Carolinian left to persue art however, attending the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design.
There he studied illustration and discovered the screen-printing process. In that
same 1989 year, Fairey found stencils and used one to create the Obey clothing logo,
which he only saw as a a cool design at the time.
In 2001 Obey Clothing was launched officially by Shepard Fairey. He finally realized
clothing was a great opportunity to be creative and way to express his creative desires as a career.
Working closely with fashion designers Mike Ternosky and Erin Wignall, Shepard translated his philosophy
of art and personal influences into OBEY.
A very diverse Hip Hop clothing, streetwear, and urban fashion brand, OBEY is unique. Addressing the various
styles with acute precision. Sold in over 20 countries worldwide, the brand has become a powerhouse
in fashion with a strong message in each clothing design.
Expanding beyond OBEY clothing, Shepard Fairey recently launched "Studio Number One." Focusing on designing
product for music and entertainment companies, he has created art for Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, and adidas Muhammad Ali
clothing project. Hired for creative visuals and marketing through Studio Number One, Fairey many times finds
ways to inject influence directly into each work.
